Israel Railways are in the midst of a massive expansion process, started in the mid 1990s. Within this framework, complying with the Israel Railways master plan, new railway lines are added to the presently existing network, and existing routes are upgraded from single to double track.

The project presented below refers to the design of the upgrading and expanding of the existing railway line, running from the core of the city of Tel Aviv and connecting to the city of LOD, thus connecting the southern part of the railway network with the coastal railway line.

The TEL AVIV-LOD railway is a key link in the railway network diverging from the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area to the south and east of the country. At present, it provides the connection between the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area and the BEN GURION International Airport. Furthermore, all suburban passenger service running between Tel Aviv and its southern suburbs (up to 30 km. to the south) reach the LOD station and deviate from there to their various destinations; in the same fashion, this LOD station serves as a branching out point for interurban routes destined to the cities of BEER SHEBA and DIMONA. On top of all that, this link is planned to be a part of a new high speed railway line from Tel Aviv to Israel Capital of Jerusalem.
The need for upgrading this section of this vital link of the railways network originates from the necessity to significantly increase railway capacity and running speed to allow higher number of faster trains running between the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area and south and east regions of the country.
The railway layout (length circa 14 km) is mostly on a plain terrain. A large part of the link lies within the right of way of National Route No. 1 (Tel Aviv – Jerusalem) in its median. About 7 km. south of Tel Aviv it bifurcates into the Ben GURION International airport branch, while the main line continues to the city of LOD.

TEDEM was chosen as the project principal designer, providing the following services:
  • Detailed survey and mapping of the planned route path and its adjacent areas.
  • Detailed physical design of the railway route.
  • Detailed design of the railway bed structure.
  • Detailed design of all aspects related to: hydrology, hydraulics, roads drainage, railway drainage, bridges and culverts, drainage channels, etc.
  • Coordination of infrastructure systems, like: communications, water, sewerage, oil pipelines, etc.
  • Preparation of detailed bills of quantity and cost estimates.
