Route 90 is Israel's longest and most eastern longitudinal highway, stretching from the town of METULA (on the Lebanese border) down to the city of EILAT on northern tip of the Red Sea shore and running along the Jordan Valley. At present it operates mostly as a 2 lane facility with no median, except few selected sections in its most northern part. The route runs along the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, crossing the core of the city of TIBERIAS.
Looking upon already existing high traffic volumes, considering forecasts of significant future increase of these volumes and for the sake of improving road safety, it was decided to rehabilitate and upgrade route 90 in the long term into a dual carriageway with 3 lanes in each direction in its final stage. |
The design encompasses a 10 km long link, with an interchange aimed to connect an adjacent PORIYA Hospital and provide additional access to the city of TIBERIAS, as stipulated in the city outline plan.
The design required to cope with problematic topography, adjacent agricultural cultivated areas, proximity to existing localities and the need to preserve exceptionally precious landscape values. An important facility of the National Water Company (the Sea of Galilee is a key potable water source on a national scale) located close to the southern edge of the planned road link required particular attention.

In the framework of the said above the Ministry of Transport, through the National Company of Roads, decided to promote a new layout for a section of Route 90, aimed to bypass the city of TIBERIAS. Since this new layout was not considered in the National Outline Roads Plan (TAMA/3), it was necessary to prepare a preliminary design of the new link as an introductory step toward statutory procedures and further promotion. Nowadays, after the new layout was approved by the National Council for Planning and Construction, a subsequent procedure of preparing a detailed local outline plan is under way. |
