Israel railways are in the midst of a massive expansion process, started in the mid 1990s. Within this framework, complying with the Israel Railways master plan, new railway lines are added to the presently existing network and existing routes are upgraded from single to double track.
The project presented below refers to the design of a new double track railway aimed to connect the cities of AKKO and KARMIEL, located in the western part of the Lower Galilee. The new railway will connect to the existing network of Israel Railways by branching out from the coastal railroad. The new railway – 23 km. in length – will be used both for passenger and freight movement. The city of AKKO is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, on the northern edge of the Haifa Bay. The city of KARMIEL is located in northern Israel in the Upper Galilee region. Both cities are located on the same latitude. |

AKKO-KARMIEL Railway Tunnel
Typical Cross Section |
The western part of the route, starting near the coastline, is on a plain plateau. Its layout is on an embankment adapted to the natural plain topography. Further to the east, the route enters moderate mountainous topography with route excavated layout between retaining walls, continues in a twin single track tunnel of 5 km, until reaching the city of KARMIEL.
Several bridges are integrated in the route layout for the sake of crossing: rivers and streams, a main coastal road and small bridges serving as culverts. Two railway stations are planned to be constructed along the planned railroad: one station approximately in the middle of the section (in the vicinity of the town of AHIHUD); the second station will be located at the end of the route in the city of KARMIEL. |
